I think every fashion-loving girl has memories of playing in her mom’s closet. I used to love throwing open the doors and running my hands over the delicate saris or playing dress up in the red silk qipao-like robe from Hong Kong.
But one of the most precious moments was the day that I finally got a piece of her wardrobe, a simple white button down shirt. My mom gave it to me because it didn’t fit her anymore, but to me it was the first real “grown-up” piece of clothing I ever had.
I loved that shirt and I wore it for years, still do, even today. It doesn’t fit me all too well anymore – the sleeves are too short – but I roll up the sleeves and none’s the wiser. I could never give it away; it was my mom’s. It was one of the first shirts she bought when we moved to America from India. It’s not fancy, nothing extraordinary but the sentimental value of it makes it priceless.
It’s probably the reason why I love a crisp white button-down shirt. This Oxford style shirt from Gap is an easy piece to toss on but still look polished. Paired with rolled slim straight jeans and a bold studded shoe, I’m ready for just about anything.
