This is not about “dressing for your age.” However, somewhere around 30, I feel that I want to portray someone who is successful, put together and chic. You know, something that really reflects my wizen old age. 🙂 I’m sure that many of you feel the same. So, having celebrated yet another year in my 30s this past weekend, here’s what I’ve learned so far.
DON’T fill your closet with fast fashion.
Fashion trends come and go. It’s not financially sustainable to keep up with every trendy item out there. More often than not, you’ll wear it once and then forget about it. It’s just not worth it.
DO pick quality over quantity.
Spend your money on quality items instead. Focus on the basics that will never go out of style. Look at it as an investment into things that you will wear for years to come. When you’re replacing clothes every 2-3 years, you’ll find that you’re getting more bang for your buck. You can still pepper in the trendy items, at a lower price point, to always stay on top of the game.
DON’T wear a fleece jacket
I love a fleece jacket but there’s a time and place for it. Hiking in the woods? Yes! Headed to yoga? Sure!? But with so many options out there, you can do better than a fleece jacket. Trust me, you can find a jacket that serves both fashion and function.
DO invest in a nice leather jacket (even if it’s faux!)
Moto jacket is my absolute favorite. There are so many flavors – super tough to chic and classy. Best part, they look good on anyone! It’s the perfect topper to any outfit, including your work outfit. I usually toss a leather jacket over any work outfit, conservative or creative. You can always take it off when you get to the office, but at least you looked super bad ass on the way to work. This jacket I have on is one of my absolute favorites.
DON’T go for low cut, short, AND body-con.
I don’t care how amazing your body is, it just feels like you’re trying too hard. I personally think it goes for any age and not just your 30s, but here we are. I like to pick one – if it’s short, go with sleeves. Low cut? That hemline should be past your knees. Leave something to the imagination; it’s far sexier than putting it all on display.
DO go for fit and structure
This outfit is a great example for this do/don’t. Since this dress was on the shorter side, so I styled it with a leather jacket to cover the sleeveless arms. It actually pulls more focus onto my legs (which are my favorite part) and adds some structure to a loosely fitted dress.
DON’T wear low rise jeans
I remember the 90s when the “skin belt” was a thing. I hang my head in shame that I have photographic evidence of that trend. In your 30s, you just shouldn’t have to risk plumber’s crack exposure.
DO take the time to find the right pair of jeans
Shopping for denim is the WORST. My self-confidence always takes a huge blow. However, it’s time to get rid of those so-so jeans. It will be painful, but take the time to try to A LOT of jeans until you find the right pair. With workplaces getting more casual, you’ll find that the perfect pair of jeans is going to become a staple in your wardrobe. You might as well put in the effort. Say goodbye to those low rise jeans and hello to a nice mid rise. Or better yet, high rise! It’s actually a more flattering look; keep everything in check!

Love these tips! For my closet, it’s all about balance. And I agree that finding the perfect denim is almost impossible! I have some jeans from NY&Co. that I absolutely love and consider almost perfect, but even so, not quite there!

These are all excellent tips – even for someone not yet in her 30s (almost there) and just want to dress a bit more maturely.

These are some great guidelines! I feel that people look their best when they dress in a way that makes them feel good – confidence is the best accessory you can wear (that and a smile)! I’m 100% with you on the fast-fashion vs. classic pieces that are timeless. The number of Forever 21 pieces in my closet have begun to dwindle over the past few years as I replace them with higher quality pieces. Thanks so much for sharing! 🙂

I totally agree, if you don’t feel great in it, don’t keep/buy it!
