I just started a new day job as a digital product manager (what is that you, you ask?) at a pretty cool agency in DC. Naturally it feels a little like the first day of school. It may not happen once a year anymore (hopefully), but it certainly has the same sense of new beginnings – what will I do, where do I go, will I make friends, and most importantly, what do I wear??
Naturally, I’ve been shopping for some new additions to my wardrobe. I mean, when the directive is to “Think of [the office] as your runway. Or don’t, that’s cool too,” it’s time to step up my game. It’s pretty much my dream come true. I now have carte blanche to wear whatever I want, without worrying if it falls within the standard confines of “work appropriate.”
I knew I didn’t want to come off as too “corporate,” especially since it’s such a creative environment. Although jeans and a t-shirt would totally be acceptable, I wanted that to be the exception, not the norm. I really do enjoy dressing up and looking professional. But I still want that unique, personal style to shine through. I mean, it is the whole reason why I started this blog. Can’t stop that now. Plus, I wear casual looks for when I’m feeling most casual – at home and relaxing on the couch, binging Netflix and getting annoyed everytime it asks if I’m still watching.
Style tips:
For my first day, I wanted to look put-together and wear more than just “jeans and a t-shirt.” First impressions and all that. So, I chose a pair of Rag and Bone slim boyfriend jeans with a raw edged hem in a medium blue. I generally avoid wearing distressed jeans to work. No matter how cool they may be, they rarely feel professional. The fade and the raw hem are on trend but still classy. I upgraded from a t-shirt to a loose fitting blouse with some interesting design details. I played off the white of the contrasting collar and pleated cuff with white kitten slingback heels – both feminine and comfortable. To offset the feminine frill, I added an edgier necklace at the collar. Finally, I chose a simple shoulder bag, that’s just big enough to fit all my necessities for work – my laptop, water bottle, wallet, and lunch.

Oh I love this cute business casual look! I work in DC too, though at a trade association in the lobbying and advocacy department so my work outfits tend to be more formal
