With both labor day weekend and the autumnal equinox behind us, it’s officially fall. Summer, somehow feels like it was another lifetime ago. I enjoyed final dregs with a long weekend, filled with an unimaginable amount of [most bad] movies. The highlight, though, was seeing The Honorable Ruth Bader Ginsberg speak at the National Book Festival. 89 years old and still a total badass. Goals.
Despite what the calendar says, the weather feeling largely undecided. Pre-fall (when did that start becoming a thing) and fall lines have hit the stores, and everyone is drunk on PSL-everything. But with temperature alternating between the 70s and the 90s, it’s always hard to figure out what to wear.
The first non-rule I’m happy to break is the “no white after labor day.” White is a perfect neutral color that can take you through the seasons; it’s just about picking the right transitional piece.
Styling tips
One of the reasons why this dress from Rent the Runway works well as a transitional piece from summer to fall is the fabric. The structure and weight of it make it feel appropriate to wear into the next season. Plus, I really love a pattern that’s also a texture. If the sneakers feel too casual, you could also wear this dress with a pair of strappy black shoes, to take it up a notch or with a pair of black suede kitten-heeled, knee-high boots. A deep red lip is a nice little nod to the non-existent DC fall weather.
